Getting the Most from Massage Therapy

Massage therapy provides many benefits for the mind and the body; however, there are some things you can do both before and after your session to help enhance the effects of your bodywork, so you get the most out of your treatment. The following tips are offered by certified massage therapists to help clients receive optimum results.

Make the Most of Your Consultation

Your initial consultation is probably the most important step in your massage therapy because it is then that will you get to know your therapist and vice versa, which will allow you to you feel more comfortable during your session. It is also during this time that the therapist will customize your treatment plan based on the information you provide.

Take this time to communicate your reason for the massage to the therapist, which will help ensure you get what you want out of your therapy. It would help if you also were sure to ask questions, which will help you form the right expectations regarding the results to anticipate. You can also request that your therapist use specific lighting, a particular type of music, or even a heated table during your massage to help you feel more relaxed.

Share the Experience

Nothing makes you feel more content than sharing a great experience with a loved one. You may consider inviting a close friend or family member to participate in massage therapy along with you to help keep you in a good mood, which will help make your massage more enjoyable.

Arrive Early

Arriving early to your appointment helps ensure you're not scrambling around at the last minute trying to make it on time, which can prevent you from relaxing during your session. It also puts stress on your therapist, who may feel rushed due to other scheduled appointments.

Be sure to show up at least 15 minutes early to your appointment, which will allow you to dress down to the proper attire and explore any locker room features. It also allows you to help promote a feeling of peace before your session.

Be Present

Try to remain in the moment, which will enable you to take in every aspect of the massage. It would help if you also were sure to communicate with your therapist during the massage about any discomfort you are experiencing. For instance, if the therapist is exerting more pressure than you would like, the pressure is too light, or you need them to devote more attention to an especially tense area of the body, then kindly let them know. Professional massage therapists are committed to bringing you the best experience in massage therapy.

Take Long, Slow Breaths

While the therapist is working on your body, especially if it is a sore area, it may cause you to tense up and hold your breath, which can prevent you from releasing stress. Instead, take long, slow breaths during your massage to help you stay relaxed, which helps make it easier to get rid of tension and stiffness throughout your body.

Sip Lots of Water Post Massage

Water is another important factor in massage therapy because it aids the body in detoxification, which helps flush any toxins released during your therapy. Failing to rid the body of these toxins after your treatment can result in your body feeling achy and tender, which defeats the purpose of your massage.

Be sure to sip lots of water in the days following your massage to keep you feeling your best. Be careful not to drink too much water before your session as it can cause you to have to stop mid massage to use the bathroom.

Enjoy Light Meals

Enjoying light meals after your massage can keep you feeling light on your feet and re-energized as opposed to heavier meals, which can leave you feeling bloated, sluggish, and uncomfortable. If you find yourself hungry following your massage, be sure to reach for light choices, such as nuts, fruits, veggie sticks, and salads, etc., to help reinforce the healing effects of your massage.

Enjoy a Relaxing Bath Following Your Massage

Taking a warm bath in the hours following your treatment further promotes muscle relaxation, which helps prolong the benefits of your massage. Furthermore, adding essential oils or bath salts to the water also assists the body with detoxification for improved overall health.

You may consider using the sauna, steam room, spa shower, or soaking in the immersion pool at the facility afterward for added convenience. You can also do some light stretches after your massage to help you relax or to work out any kinks or knots that may still be lingering.

Practice Good After Care

After you massage, it is important to rest to encourage repair and regeneration throughout the body. Therefore, you should avoid stressful activities, including strenuous workouts that can stress your muscles. If any areas of soreness remain after your massage, your therapist may recommend applying an ice pack, hot water pack, or even pain gel to the area to help the muscles relax.

Depending on your stress levels, your emotional well being, and your body condition, your therapist may recommend massage therapy at least once or twice weekly until the condition improves. Otherwise, you may consider getting a massage about once a month to help maintain your tissue and muscle health.
